THE THESES OF IDENTITY IN Z6 AND H6 OF ARISTOTLE’S METAPHYSICS

THE THESES OF IDENTITY IN Z6 AND H6 OF ARISTOTLE’S METAPHYSICS Danish Yearbook of Philosophy, Vol. 38 (2003), 7-36 THE THESES OF IDENTITY IN Z6 AND H OF ARISTOTLE' S METAPHYSICS MORTEN HANSEN Department of Philosophy University of Southem Denmark As long as Aristotle's Metaphysics has been read and interpreted, the question whether ousia is to be considered as universal or particular has been the subject of much debate and seems, admittedly, as puzzling today as ever. In this paper, which presents one of the comerstones of my interpretation of Aristotle's metaphysics, I shall address this very problem in relation to Z6 and H . My main thesis is that Aristotle operates with a universal as well as a partic ular conception of ousia and that these have different functions and serve spe eific purposes in his theory and further that this duality is not necessarily dam aging to the theory as a whole. Moreover this reading offers us the advantage of not having to explain away the fact that Aristotle's text actually provides us with numerous examples of both particular and universal ousiai. Hence, in this paper I Intend to demonstrate that such a metaphysical outlook is very produc tive to the interpretation of Z6 as well as H http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Danish Yearbook of Philosophy Brill
