Wang Lijian 王力里 DA ER Hou GONG 洼而後工: A LITERARY CONCEPT AS A RESULT OF THE FLOURISHING TIMES IN THE REIGN OF EMPEROR KANGXI (1662-1722f From Qiong er hou gong to Da er hou gong Da er hou gong 洼而後工, it means that the literature would excel in prosperity. This was, prior to the Qing Dynasty (1 644-1911), raised in opposition to the theory that the literature would excel in adversity (qiong er hou gong 弱而後工) and was denied usually. As early as the Tang Dynasty (618-907), Han Yu 挥愈 (768-824) , a founder of the literary movement for writing in classical style (guwen yundong 古文莲勤), raised the theory that the literature would excel in adversity in view of that many excellent literary works in the history of China were created by the writers who lived in adversity.
