In April 2016, the Shiʿi Studies Group (ssg) at the University of Chicago hosted its third annual symposium on Shiʿi studies. The ssg was formed in 2010, when, although there were no regular courses on Shiʿi Islam offered at the university, there were several faculty members and students with either expertise or interest in Shiʿism. The Shiʿi Studies Group provided an informal forum to discuss issues related to the study of Shiʿism. Under the leadership of then graduate students Edmund Hayes, then Alexander Mueller, and Mohammad Sagha, the group soon progressed to organize more formal lectures with invited speakers. In 2013, Shiʿi Studies at the University of Chicago received a great boost by visiting Professor Robert Gleave who organized a workshop on Shiʿi Studies through the Mellon Islamic Studies Initiative. Following the success of Gleave’s workshop, we realized that despite the myriad of great scholars working in the field of Shiʿi Studies in North America, there was then no regular forum to bring these scholars together.
