It suggests that the myth of these years being golden ones in the memory of many men is false and that most boys of this age experience it as a painful time. The thesis of the book is that the "spirituality of early adolescent boys is more likely to issue from experiences that the boy considers negative than from experiences he considers positive."(p.lO) The authors argue that spirituality at this age has to do with the discovered sense of "spirit" and this is shaped by the early adolescent's increasing sense of self-awareness (thoughts and emotions that are his own), self-transcendence (he is part of something bigger and beyond his small existence) and self-sufficiency (discovering that he can take care of himself) .
