This book contains the proceedings of arecent meeting held at the Centro Stefano Franscini, Monte Verita, Ascona, especially inspired by the 'Laurophyllisation', i.e., the spreading of evergreen broad-Ieaved plants (especially garden escapes) in temperate forests, allegedly due to global warming. There are 16 original papers, and summaries of three workshops held in conjunction with the conference. SeveraI papers convincingly document a relationship between milder winters and the expansion of laurophyllous species. Other studies stress factors other than global warming as causal for the invasive behaviour these evergreen broad-Ieaved trees: e.g. empty niches in abandoned vineyards in Switzerland, in disturbed forests (for invasion by Rhododendron ponticum) in Ireland, and land use effects in Southern Chile. An attractive element of these proceedings is the verbatim inclusion of the extensive discussions held during the meeting. Readers with an active interest in early effects of global warming on our natural and man-made environment should read the book.
