Bernard J. Rendle IAWA Bulletin n.s., Vol. 120),1991: 3-4 28 November 1903 - 10 April 1990 Bernard Rendle, a founder member and honorary life member of the International Asso- ciation of Wood Anatomists, died at his horne on 10 April 1990, within sight of the Laboratory at Princes Risborough where he spent most of his working life. After school at Bishop's Stortford, Rendie went to the Imperial College of London University where he graduated in Botany in the mid-twenties. It was at a time when the need for research on wood was being recognised in Britain and, in anticipation of the establishment of a Forest Products Research Laboratory, Rendle was sent to the Imperial Forestry Institute at Oxford to initiate studies in wood anatomy. It was at Oxford that he met Laurence Chalk, then a lecturer in the Department of Forestry; the two men established a life-long friendship and many nove1 ideas concerning the structure and behaviour of wood derived from their joint discussions. In the meantime, laboratory facilities were being provided at Princes Risborough and Rendie moved there in 1930. He established the section known for many years as Wood Structure, with a team of research workers which included S.H.
