ESSAYS, STUDIES, CRITICAL THEORY Jacques Bersani et al., La Liltirature en France depuis 1945, Bordas, 1980, 927 pp., is an updated version of the 1970 edition; a substantial new chapter (pp. 838-910) is devoted to the period 1969-79; the high standard of commentary is maintained. Panorama critique de la litterature moderne, Belfond, 1980,490 pp., is the somewhat misleading title of a collection of mainly brief, but often very perceptive, pieces by the late Claude Bonnefoy; many works by recent French writers are lucidly appraised. Christopher Robinson's lively, idiosyncratic account of French Literature in the Twentieth Century, David & Charles, 1980,218 pp., does arguably less justice to the post-1945 period; by far the most useful chapter is the one on 'National Consciousness' which offers a valuable survey of writing in Africa and the Caribbean, Algeria, Switzerland and Quebec.
