Shepard and F. M. Chambers, Northwestern U.P. For this new ed . of the prose biographies the editors have consulted all the known MSS. and the text established has much greater authority than that of Chabaneau. The introd. contains a brief discussion of the character and historical value of the biographies. The notes are based for the most part on Chabaneau and on existing eds. and works on the troubadours treated, and are designed principally to identify the characters mentioned in the texts and to explain the historical and geographical allusions. For the first crit . ed. of Aimeric de Peguilhan the work pre pared by the late W. Shepard has been taken over and brought to completion with some alterations by F. M. Chambers.
