GERMAN STUDIES: THE SEVENTEENTH CENTURY

GERMAN STUDIES: THE SEVENTEENTH CENTURY German Studies THE SEVENTEENTH CENTURY By JILL BEPLER, Herzog August Bibliothek, Wolftnbuttel I. GENERAL Attention must be drawn to the publication of the first volume of Gerhard Diinnhaupt, Personalbibliographien zu den Drucken des Barock, Stuttgart, Hiersemann, xxxviii + 757 pp. This heralds a totally revised and expanded edition of D.'s Bibliographisches Handbuch der Barockliteratur, Ig8o, which even in the original far exceeded the bounds of mere bibliography. D.'s work continues to be invaluable to all scholars working on German Baroque literature. The history of the book and reading practices has become a vital interest not only of social but also of literary historians as we widen our perception of literature and its contexts. W. Adam, 'Privatbibliotheken im I 7. und I8.Jahrhundert (Forschungsbericht I975-Ig88)', IASL, IS: I23-73, offers a very useful survey of recent work on private libraries in the German-speaking territories. Examination of the holdings of such collections and the way in which they were arranged and catalogued often gives a useful corrective to our modern and in many ways narrow idea ofliterature. Several works this year concern themselves with texts of the Gebrauchsliteratur which far outnumbered belles lettres in Baroque libraries. Manfred Beetz, Fruhmoderne Hofiichkeit.
