Abstract

French Studies THE TWENTIETH CENTURY, 1900-1945 By SusAN R. HARROW, Lecturer in French at the University College of Swansea (This survey covers the years rg8g and rggo) I. EssA vs, STUDIES The literature of the Occupation has given rise to a profusion of studies and surveys which cut across the traditional divide between literary studies and French area studies. The fiftieth anniversary of the fall of France may account for this cross-fertilization but it is perhaps the sign of a determination to move beyond rigorously drawn boundaries to more flexible positions and engage critical discussion at complementary levels whilst maintaining high standards of scholar ship. La Litterature fran~aise sous !'Occupation, Rheims U.P., Ig8g, 35 I pp., publishes 29 generally short contributions to the Rheims colloquium of Ig8I; although offering an inevitably rapid overview of the literary production of both resisters and collaborators, the collection gives some idea of the diversity and complexity of responses to defeat and occupation.
