ITALIAN STUDIES: LANGUAGE

ITALIAN STUDIES: LANGUAGE 424 Romance Languages VIII. ITALIAN STUDIES LANGUAGE By M. MAIR PARRY, Lecturer in Italian, University College of Wales, Aberystwyth I. GENERAL Six volumes of collected essays by individual scholars have appeared, containing some previously unpublished work. Giulio C. Lepschy, Sulla linguistica modema, Bo, II Mulino, 465 pp., unites in a coherent synthesis a series of wide-ranging articles reflecting the many branches of the discipline as well as the scholarly and imaginative approach for which the author is renowned. The volume's three sections: Tendenze (structuralism, generative grammar), Questioni teoriche (e.g. concerning translation, semantics, discourse theory), Indagini storiche (including Saussure, Freud, Marxism), contain Italian exemplification of particular linguistic points. L.'s clarity of exposi tion and balanced attitude also inform Nuovi saggi di linguistica italiana, Bo, II Mulino, 239 pp., which contains recent publications covering three areas, Aspetti dell'italiano contemporaneo, Questioni di grammatica and Struttura e storia di parole. A worthy testimony to the productivity of one of the most authoritative historians of the language is Giovanni Nencioni, Saggi di lingua antica e modema, Rosenberg and Sellier, 456 pp. (hereafter Nencioni, Saggi), comprising: La lingua italiana nel tempo, Uomini e cose della linguistica italiana, Saggi di lessicografia.
