GENERAL Reflecting the growing interest in the Nordic countries since the beginning of the 1970s in language research beyond the single sentence is Nordic Research in Text Linguistics and Discourse Anarysis. Papers from the first NORD TEXT Symposium, Trondheim, August 15-IB, 1985, ed. Lars Sigfred Evensen, Trondheim, Tapir, 278 pp. In 15 papers the wide range of current research in text linguistics, oral and written discourse is presented. A weighty contribution to a systematic oral training in the teaching of Norwegian is Liv Marit Aksnes, Samtalens spelerom. Norsk munnleg i teori og praksis, Cappelen, 1985, 152 pp., theoretically based in pragmatics, rhetoric, and drama. A long series of situations relevant to practical usage are exemplified. A near-comprehensive introduction to literary analysis, stimulating, laudably clear and well-expressed, is Asfrid Svensen, Tekstens menstre. /nnforing i littert£r anaryse, Norwegian U.P., 1985, 272 pp. To some extent it also comprises linguistic and pragmatic factors, such as tonal effects, choice of words, semantic and syntactic patterns, metaphori­ cal language, and narrative points of view.
