Alvarez de Morales, Inquisicion e Ilustracion (IJOo-1834), M, Fundaci6n Universitaria Espanola, I982, 220 pp., describes the gradual decline of the Jesuit influence on the Indices of the Inquisition after the rehabilitation of the works ofEnrico Norris, attributes the Santo Ojicio's fall from grace at the end of the century to the respective doctrines of Regalism and J ansenism, and assesses the effect of the Fr. Revolution on the changing concept of heresy. The terminological inertia of most r8th-century literary historians is condemned by G. Camero, La cara oscura del siglo de las luces, M, Fundaci6njuan March, I23 pp., who contends that a valid assessment of Spanish Enlightenment literature can only be attemp­ ted through the dialectic duality of Reason and emotion and sensibility. Concentrating on the second part of the equation, he analyses the aesthetic canon of lo sublime in the genres of the comedia sentimental, poetry and the narrative. J. M.
