An introductory chapter on information gathering and a basic reading list of literary histories and genre surveys, both designed for students, are followed by annotated lists of reference works, bibliographies and journals. The second half is concerned with institutions, listing and usefully describing major libraries and data banks, specialist collections, archives, teaching and research institutes, learned and literary societies, writers' organizations, etc. B. makes no claim to exhaustive­ ness, and understandably the focus is almost exclusively on German-language publications and institutions in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. But it is a boon to have so much up-to-date information so conveniently an9. inexpensively packaged, and so lucidly laid out. W.
