GENERAL The flow of works devoted to gen. problems of lit. scholarship, the theory of lit., methods of criticism, the history of lit., etc., swelling during the 6os, dwindled to a trickle after I969 and has all but dried up in the years I972-3. At the national Seminar of Communist theoreticians in science, lit. scholarship and art (Prague, l4-I5·5·I973) it was decreed that 'the revival of revisionist theories and hidden counter-revolutionary trends' was to be prevented (L. Stoll, 'Nektere otazky zamerenf metodologie literarnevedneho badani', CL, I 973: 493-6), and only 'criticism anchored in Marxist-Leninist theory and identifying itself with the present struggle' should be cultivated (H. Hrzalova, 'Ke vztahu teorie a kritiky', ib., 497-501). The immediate impact was summed up by one of the leading critics: 'Historical experience is merciless. The 6os, with their sad I968 epilogue, have revealed where everybody stood.
