GENERAL In addition to extensive studies on the central authors - Claudel, Gide, Proust, Valery - marked interest continues in Bernanos, Fournier, Giraudoux, Martin du Gard and Rolland. This year has seen renewed interest in Colette, and a special emphasis on Celine and Peguy, who is emerging as a figure of great stature and vitality. Of the poets, Apollinaire, Breton, Eluard, Perse, Reverdy and Supervielle continue to stimulate scholarly work. Histories of lit., and more gen. sur­ veys, tend to be devoted less to the novel and drama than to the poetry of the period, and notably to surrealism. Calls of crit. or textual publs are proliferating, with series such as 'Univers des lettres Bordas', 'Grit. de notre temps', 'En verve', 'Profil d'une cxuvre', which sometimes incorporate the product of scholarly research, though it is often minor. Coverage by the Grant and Cutler ser. of Research Bibls and Checklists is being extended, now incl., for example, Breton, Fromentin, Gracq, Claudel, Perse and Weil. An important new work is J. M.
