Benichou, Le Sacre de l'ecrivain, 175o-I8JO (see p. 94), is an imposing study, mentioning most of the authors of this period, and tracing the steps by which, from the I8th to the I9th c., the old religious beliefs were replaced by a faith in which Man himself occupied first place and showing how 'le spiritualisme du I9e siecle sacre le Poete' (p. 469). F. P. Bowman, Le Christ romantique (HICL, I34), 279 pp., in the first of three proposed vols, covers some of the same ground but attacks from a different angle, and, after two historical surveys comparing the attitude of the Church to the Revolution, republicanism and the revolutionary ideals in I 789 and in I 848, devotes chaps to the Romantic attitude to slavery, the identification of Christ and Napoleon, etc., and has a final long chap. on the implications for literature of the Romantic theories of 'le sublime et le grotesque'.
