Ptg. texts, together with stylistics, 163-77; A. J. Dias outlines the history of Ptg. ethnographic studies, 1-64, and surveys the main work in this field from 1939 to 1951, 65-136. Medieval English studies have again produced (in the same journal as Moore's art. recorded in 'YWML, 30: 287) a metho­ dological essay which will serve as a salutary warning to students of Ptg. lit.: John Halverson, 'Template criticism: Sir Gawain and the Green Knight', MP, 67: 133-9, discusses with vigour and good sense the uses, and especially the dangers, of approaching a med. work with a preconceived framework of interpretation. The theory of textual criticism is as rarely discussed by med. Ptg. specialists as are theoretical problems of lit. crit., and consequently this also must be sought elsewhere.
