Apart from the opening piece on poetry and politics which sets the tone, all have been published previously and focus on the modern tendency 'unser Dasein vorwiegend durch soziologische und politische Brillen zu sehen'. The mechanization and depersonalization of life which have ousted ethical-humanistic traditions are deplored, but in trying to perform a balancing act between the past and present, H. involves himself in conflict with such leading writers as Grass, Enzensberger and Frisch.
