It fails as it is neither adequate as an anthology nor as a history of literature. The treatment is highly subjective; thus there are two pages on Trakl and six on Agnes Miegel. W. Schwerbrock, Eine Geschichte der deutschen Literatur, Frankfurt, Scheffier, 215 pp., is an unscholarly and unbalanced work. K. A. Horst's Die deutsche Literatur der Gegenwart, 1957, has now been brought up to date and considerably augmented under the new title: Kritischer Fuhrer durch die deutsche Literatur der Gegenwart, Munich, Nymphen­ burger Verlag, 524 pp., which contains an additional section of some zoo pages on the Essay. This new ed. is, however, as woolly as its predecessor. More specific surveys include Spiitzeiten und Spiitzeitlichkeit, ed. W. Kohlschmidt, Berne-Munich, Francke, 176 pp. L.
