GERMAN STUDIES: THE CLASSICAL ERA

GERMAN STUDIES: THE CLASSICAL ERA German Studies A noteworthy event is the anthology: Der Protestantismus des 17. Jhs, ed. W. Zeller, Bremen, Schiinemann (Sammlung Dieterich, 270), lxvi+426 pp. The texts (mainly prose) are slightly modern ized and there are biog. and bibl. notes, but no index. The central theme is theological: the development of the concept of piety within 17th-c. Protestant orthodoxy. Pietism is excluded, but the choice is otherwise liberal. Apart from their great value as part of the 'background' of baroque literature, many of the texts claim attention as literature in their own right. Some outstanding authors are represented and, while Zeller justifiably avoids discus sion of specifically baroque aspects in his introd., the baroque nature of such texts as Heermann's sermon of 1624 (pp. 109-20) is unmistakable.
