GENERAL Perhaps the most noteworthy event has been the completion of the 3rd vol. of A. J. Saraiva's Historia da Cultura em Portugal, L, Jornal do Foro, 719 pp. This vol., which contains some of Saraiva's best work, is the last: S. explains that present conditions in Portugal make it impossible for him to continue as he wished. He here covers the activities of the Inquisition, the official chivalresque ideology of expansion overseas, Mendes Pinto's satirical reaction to this, and Camoes as lyric and epic poet. The 3rd ed. of Saraiva and Lopes, Historia da Lit. Ptg. (cf. YWML, xx, 290), Oporto, Porto Ed., 1961, has an extra 6o pages. F. Piccolo, *Storia della letteratura ptg., Milan, Nuova Accademia, 1961.
