GERMAN: LITERATURE, 1830-1880 LITERATURE, 1830-1880 By GL YN T. HUGHES Lecturer in Comparative Literary Studies in the University of Manchester I. GENERAL It is clear that this period is attracting ever-increasing interest, some of which is now concentrated on a re-examination of the terminology. Important works have also appeared on individual authors, notably Immermann and Stifter, and the many inter pretations of texts are crowned by Guardini's Morike essays. The most valuable eds are the Hanser thin-paper Keller, now completed, and the pioneering Weerth of B. Kaiser. It may also not be out of place to mention the appearance of an attractive series of pocket-books, the Stiasny Bucherei, which aims at covering the whole field of Austrian lit. Of the first 20 or so titles over half are devoted to the 19th century. The chief crit. contribution has been R. Brinkmann, Wirk lichkeit und Illusion: Studien uber Gehalt und Grenzen des Begriffs Realismus fur die erziihlende Dichtung des 19. Jhs, Tiibingen, Max Niemeyer. After a spirited and detailed cri ticism of previous attempts to define 'realism', the concept is explored in 3 long analyses of Grillparzer's Der arme Spielmann, Ludwig's Zwischen Himmel und Erde and E. v.
