GENERAL HE flood of publishing continues in high spate. Of the 291 printers listed in Bibl. Hispanica, Jan. 1952, the most important, by paper allocation, are: Espasa-Calpe, Luis Vives (Saragossa), Salvat, Aguilar, Labor, CSIC; of the total of 4206 works, 1865 are literary and include 573 novels (including many transl. which also swell the 928 detective and adventure novels), and 129 books of poetry. Only 489 are re-eds. of older works. The Col. Mas AlIa reached its century and Austral published Menendez Pidal Poema del Cid to mark its first thousand vols. Literary prizes proliferate, through the generous rivalry of regions, publishers, institutions, individuals, and even cafes (Gijon) and writers themselves (C. J. Cela). The Premio Nadal for novels offers the winner 35,000 pesetas and a maximum 1st ed. of 5000 copies: Nada of Carmen Laforet (winner 1945) is now in its 8th ed.
