Abstract

Spanish Medieval Literature deavoured to show that in some cases at least the ballads of Pedro the Cruel serve as sources for Ayala's Cronica and not vice versa; and has suggested that they bear indications of the second civil war (that against Pedro's daughter, John of Gaunt's wife) as well as of the first. Further, he has pointed out that the epical ballads are not historical in the same sense as those of the civil and frontier wars, because they depend on previous literature, the cantares de gesta; and he expresses doubt as to the adequacy of an epic theory of ballad origins to account for the specific marks of balladry, which are, however, necessary to those inspired by history and used for local record or civil propaganda. H. Thomas has beautifully reproduced thirteen ballads from pliegos sueltos in the British Museum,Z7 with woodcuts and brief notes on the texts. 'J. M. de C.' has a note on Fray Ambrosio Montesino, bishop of Sarda in Al bania.zs On Pero Lopez de Ayala theses have been presented to the Universities of London and Glasgow, and on Perellos, viscount of Roda, to the University of Belfast.
