INTRODUCTION PANISH studies in the war years were, for obvious Sreasons, handicapped in all countries, and the quality of the work done since the war has been affected by difficulties of communication. This applies to some extent also to work produced in the United States and in Latin America, as well as in England, France and Spain. This summary of work done on Spanish literature from the 18th cent. to the present day will, therefore, refer to scarcely any items from Germany or Italy. From France it has been possible to collect a certain amount of information, thanks principally to the continued publication during the war of BH. During the Spanish Civil War (1936-39), little was done in Spain, but since 1940 Spanish scholars in exile and inside Spain have produced an increasing number of works, some of permanent value. The Cervantes fourth centenary in 1947 meant that scholars con­ centrated much of their efforts, and periodicals devoted their space, to articles on Cervantes, rather than on the more modern period.
