Berger throws light on the general polemics of the Reformation period in his introduction to a selection from Murner and Daniel von Soest. On the whole, Catholic controversialists were at a disadvantage, as their thesis was less capable of expression in popular language than Luther's drastic restatement of Christian principles. Murner, who clung to the tradition of the popular moralizing sermon, is an exception. He differs also from most Catholic writers in preferring attack to defence as the more effective form of controversy. Daniel von Soest, on Low German soil, shows the same ease of colloquial expression as Murner, but his knowledge of Luther's writings is largely second-hand and inadequate for his purpose.
