Power and performance: The Bruges mantelpiece to Charles V 214 Ethan Matt Kavaler 215 Power and performance The Bruges mantelpiece to Charles V Ethan Matt Kavaler One of the most extraordinary Netherlandish artworks of the sixteenth Detail fig. 7 century, and one that avoids easy classification, is the expansive mantelpiece dedicated to Emperor Charles V in the administrative building of the Liberty in Bruges (fig. 1). Designed and carved between 1528 and 1531, the mantelpiece is a complex creation. The lower region around the hearth is executed in black marble, topped by a lintel in white alabaster with Old Testament reliefs for contemplation by the aldermen who gathered in this judicial chamber. Across the breast of this work stand 1 nearly life-size wooden statues of Emperor Charles V flanked by his four Lanceloot Blondeel (designer), Mantelpiece grandparents.
