Introduction ‘ It may perhaps be thought surprising that we should attach so much im portance to what we term the “ preliminary examination before treatm ent” [the examination that precedes the actual restoration and con servation ]. W e posit it as axiom atic that the bringing together and setting against one another of the historical, aesthetic and scientific aspects is a primary pre- requisite without which no-one has the right to assum e the responsibility for the treatment of an im portant work of a r t .( ...) l t s (the m useum ’s) new task, scientific and educational, is met by a new conception of the treat ment of w orks of art, cognisant and respectful of all aspects of the problem s it p o se s.’ 1 These w ords of the late Paul Coremans published a quarter of a century ago are still fully valid for any restoration.
