They make possible the exchange of goods and services and, thus, play an essential role in daily life. For this reason, contract law is of great importance in people’s lives as well: it shapes the conditions under which contracts can be concluded and enforced. Moreover, in a time of increasing Europeanisation and globalisation of contractual relationships, the debate extends to what laws should govern contracts in a cross-border market. Not surprisingly, therefore, legal scholarship has discussed broadly principles of European contract law in the last decades and the European Commission endorses the idea of a more comprehensive instrument of contract law for the Digital Single Market. Remarkably, though, the European discourse tends to focus on the provision of goods through sales contracts, which are mostly one-off transactions. Many basic needs of European citizens, however, are fulfilled in social long-term relations that create opportunities for self-realisation and participation in society, such as labour, tenancy, and consumer credit contracts.
