The Qing Military in the Nineteenth Century

The Qing Military in the Nineteenth Century The turn of the nineteenth century marks the coming of a new phase in Qing military history. In the eighteenth century, the Qing military had demonstrated its effectiveness in a number of frontier wars as well as several domestic campaigns to quell revolts, despite some major setbacks on the battlefield and increasingly debilitating problems in the system. By contrast, the nineteenth century was full of uncertainties, challenges, and crises. In the existing scholarship, the dysfunction and collapse of the Qing military in the middle of the nineteenth century, when the Opium War and the Taiping civil war took place, has been well articulated. Likewise, the adoption of Western military technology and organization in the latter part of the century has also been examined at length. Indeed, the transformation from the original Qing military system to a modern one merits consideration as the most important theme in China’s nineteenth-century military history. Nevertheless, there are more questions worthy of exploration. Despite apparent dissimilarities in their topics, the first two articles in this issue are both aimed at bringing to light new questions and perspectives that have not been included in the common knowledge of the nineteenth century. Abstract

The turn of the nineteenth century marks the coming of a new phase in Qing military history.
