T E, 145, 2002 BOOK REVIEWS Dick Groenendijk & Titia Wolterbeek, 2001. Praktisch natuurbeheer: vlinders en libellen. Wegwijzer voor natuur- projecten. [Practical nature management: butterflies and dragonflies. Guide for nature projects. In Dutch] – KNNV Uitgeverij, Utrecht & De Vlinderstichting, Wageningen. 219 pp, 24x17 cm, hardback, many illustrations, incl. full colour. ISBN 90-5011-149-1. Price EUR 27.95. Many books have been written on butterflies and dragonflies, local identification guides, distribution atlases, beautiful books with habitat descriptions and notes on decline and conservation, but this is some- thing completely new amongst these. A book giving practical hints for conserving butterflies and dragon- flies, making habitat more suitable, carrying out re- search projects and monitoring insects. The butterfly friendly management of nature areas, but also gardens is described in detail and also the procedure of de- signing a project plan is described. Although these two insect groups are the flags, the authors also pay attention to many other flora and fauna groups, in- cluding grasshoppers and wild bees. With so many different topics and approaches with a wide range from education in the direct surround- ings to management of nature reserves, the authors run the risk that the book is somewhat of a hodge podge and quite complicate to use. Despite that, mo- tivated workers will certainly find many useful hints for a more insect friendly management of nature. In conclusion: a remarkable book for all those in- terested in insect conservation, and capable of reading some Dutch. [Erik J. van Nieukerken]
