Prosperity in Co-Operation: The Asean-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (AANZFTA) I INTRODUCTION The importance and operation of a Free Trade Agreement ('FTA') is to ensure market access and create new opportunities for business and industry in foreign markets. Abstract

I INTRODUCTION The importance and operation of a Free Trade Agreement ('FTA') is to ensure market access and create new opportunities for business and industry in foreign markets. This article considers the extent to which, and how, the ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand FTA ('AANZFTA') achieves these goals. Part II looks at the origins and expansion of the Association of South-East Asian Nations ('ASEAN'). ASEAN's founding objectives are considered alongside its internal integration and economic growth as a regional trading bloc. Part m examines the development of Australia's trading relationship with ASEAN and New Zealand and how the trilateral negotiations for a free trade area and FTA between them originated. The trilateral approach is placed in the context of Australia and New Zealand's strong trading partnership via their Closer Economic Relations (`CEIZ') arrangement.' The impetus for negotiations on formalising a free trade area is located in the establishment of the ASEAN Free Trade Area ('AFTA') and several reports, commissioned to study the benefits of a free trade area between ASEAN and the CER partners. These studies are examined against the political and global financial events at the turn of the century. The progression from informal negotiations to a formalised trading agreement
