SHOKOOHY 1 "Malik Baha al-Din Tughrul was a personality of excellent disposition, extremely just, kind to strangers, and adorned with humility," according to the historian of the court of Delh Minhaj-i Siraj.2 As Baha al-Din was not, so far as we can see, in favor at court, the historian's praise is surprisingly effusive. He continues his account as follows: He was a slave of long standing of the victorious sultan (sultän-ighäzl) Mucizz al-Din [Muhammad ibn Sam], who had brought hirn up and given hirn a good education. The fortress of Tahangar was in the territory of Bhayana, and was part of the realm of the räi. 3 When the sultan conquered it, he gave it to Baha al-Din, who made that territory prosperous. Merchants and men of distinction from different parts of Hindustan and Khurasan joined hirn, and he gave all of them houses and resources which were to be their own property, and for this reason they settled near hirn.
