Abstract
Beneath the Qubbat al-S akhra , in th e sou the rn wall of th e cavern in th e ro ck , is em bedde d wh at Creswell believed to be th e " earliest exta n t mihrab in I slam " (plate 1), contemporary with th e D ome of th e R ock and asc ri be d to its founder , cAbd ai-Malik. C re swell presents two arg u ments for presuming a lat e-seven th centu ry date : one is th e "curious lin e orname n t" ca rve d on the face of th e a rch and the rec ta ngula r frame which " recalls th e d ecoration on a m ilest on e of cAbd al-Malik" now in th e Lou vre ; th e other is th e shahad a ins cribed ac ross th e base of the arch in "archaic Kufic characters" com bine d with th e "equally archaic ins cription " ou tside th e m olding that fra mes th e mihrah .'
