Japansk religion , written by Esben Andreasen and Jørn Borup Esben Andreasen and Jørn Borup, Japansk religion . Højbjerg: Forlaget Univers, 2013. 207 pages. ISBN 978 87 91668 32 6. Like many who have taught introductory courses on Japanese religion, I have struggled with the problem of finding literature that is not too specialized, not too narrow in scope, and yet pedagogically engaging. The good news is that the book under review here is such a volume. The bad news is that unless your students read Danish, it will not be for them. More than twenty years ago, Ian Reader (1993) made a revised and extended English version of another Danish textbook on Japanese religion: Japans religioner: i fortid og nutid by Esben Andreasen and Finn Stefánsson (1986). The English title was a straight translation of the Danish: Japanese Religions, Past and Present . I mention this textbook here, because the book under review is clearly an updated version of this old mainstay of Japanese religion courses. The format is identical: brief introductory overviews, followed by extended sections of “readings” that consist of translations of primary texts and vignettes from religious life in Japan. Rather than a sustained argument, both books offer collections of snapshots from different corners http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Journal of Religion in Japan Brill
