p aolo p al Chetti 1. Composition of the Cou Rt On 6 February 2009, three new Judges began their term of office: Antônio Augusto Cançado Trindade, Christopher Greenwood and Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf. On the same day Judge Hisashi Owada was elected President of the Court and Judge Peter Tomka was elected Vice-President. In February 2009, the Judges of the Court elected the members of the Chamber of Summary Procedure. Since 1946, neither the Chamber of Summary Procedure nor the special chambers provided under Article 26(1) of the Statute have been used by States. On the other hand, resort to the ad hoc chambers provided under Article 26(2) of the Statute has proved a more attractive option. It is generally submitted that this is due to the fact that, after the 1972 revision of the Rules of the Court, parties are given a role in determining the composition of the chamber dealing with the dispute. Resort to ad hoc chambers met with great success during the 1980s, when, between 1981 and 1987, four cases, out of a total of nine brought to the Court, were referred to the procedure provided under Article 26(2) of the Statute.
