During the 20th century, Spain went from being a source of emigration (to the Americas at the beginning of the century, and to Europe in the fifties and sixties) to a recipient of immigrants. The past twenty years have witnessed a reversal of these demographic trends owing to a dual phenomenon: on the one hand, a steady flow of former emigrants returning to Spain (a total of as many as 350,000 between 1985 and 1999);' and on the other, a very significant increase in the number of immigrants, leading the number of foreign nationals residing in Spain to increase fourfold between 1980 and 1999.
