So it often comes with suspicion and resentments. The moral quality of autonomy is then in danger of being dissipated in the process leading to its concession and later functioning. Due to the good sense of Finland, Sweden and the people of Åland, the moral quality of autonomy inspired them, ensuring its success, widely admired through the world.¹ Indeed, the case of the Åland Islands is presented sometimes even as a "model" of ethnoterritorial confl ict resolution. The present volume, edited by Sia Spiliopoulou Åkermark, challenges this simplistic view and explains why the Åland should not be understood as a one-size-fits-all solution but as an "example" with three main components: (i) demilitarization and neutralization, (ii) self-government and (iii) cultural and linguistic safeguards of the minority protection regime.
