KNUDSEN IV The religious socialist movement foundered, Tillich said, because it was unable to solve the problem that was most difficult for it, namely, how from the standpoint of the eternal adecision in time is possible. 1 This movement, for which he had entertained such high expectations, found itself at the time of the rise of Adolf Hitler 2 without political power. Soon its forces were scattered by Nazi persecution, and some of its major proponents, including Tillich himself, were forced into exile. Why had this movement, which for many had appeared to have such potential, been so little able to cope with the developing political situation? Refusing to take a purely socio-economic and political point of view,3 Tillich ascribed this inability to fundamental tensions within the religious socialist movement itself, more specifically, as he himself clearly stated, to its failure to solve the basic problem of meaningful action in history .
