Wanneer men de inhoud van de afzonderlijke essays die wij in dit boek aantreffen beziet, wekt de titel God and the Ethics of Belief op het eerste gezicht enige verbazing. Met de term Ethics of Belief wordt in de epistemologie gewoonlijk de discussie aangeduid over de vraag aan welke condities voldaan moet zijn wil men (epistemologisch en/of moreel) verantwoord handelen in het geloven van bepaalde proposities. In het debat hierover is de aandacht met name uitgegaan naar de evidentialistische theorieën van onder meer John Locke, Bertrand Russell en William Clifford. Het door Chignell en Dole geredigeerde boek bevat echter een veelheid aan godsdienstfilosofische themata die vaak weinig of niets met dit onderwerp te maken hebben. Men zal de titel dan ook breder moeten opvatten: het boek bevat artikelen die voornamelijk gaan over de rationaliteit van (christelijke) geloofsovertuigingen. Wat dat betreft geeft de subtitel het thema van het boek beter weer: nieuwe essays in de godsdienstfilosofie. De auteurs hebben het moment van uitgave bewust gekozen: precies vijftig jaar geleden verscheen het bekende werk
