A collapse of world cocoa and coffee prices in 1986 caused a recession from which the country has gradually recovered. President Houphouet- Boigny, having introduced multi-party politics in 1990, won the subsequent presidential election (his seventh term), while the ruling Democratic Party was returned to power.
