COMMUNITY OF PORTUGUESE SPEAKING COUNTRIES (CPLP) By The Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries (CPLP) is an international organisation created on 17 July of 1996, in Lisbon (Portugal), by a Constitutive Declaration. The CPLP has 8 member states worldwide. In addition to the five African members, Portugal, Brazil and East Timor are members. Around 200 million people worldwide speak Portuguese. OBJECTIVES The CPLP is a multidimensional and geographically diversified forum linking the Portuguese- speaking countries, based on cultural ties, identified by a common language, historic link and common heritage. Its guiding principles include the sovereign equality of member states, supremacy of peace, democracy, the rule of law, respect for human rights, social justice, and promotion of development. Its general objectives consists of concerted action between its member states at both political and diplomatic level in its international relations, particularly with the aim of asserting its presence in the international fora. It also promotes co-operation, particularly in the economic, social, cultural, legal, technical and scientific spheres. The implementation of projects designed to promote and disseminate the Portuguese language is another area of focus of the CPLP.
