Shellfish and limited quantities of chromium, mica and graphite are also exported. The country has a variety of unexploited mineral deposits, notably bauxite, nickel, titanium, uranium and coal. Yielding to popular demand for competitive politics, President Ratsiraka allowed the formation of political parties other than the ruling coalition of Marxist­ orientated parties in March 1 990.
