Report on the Centre for Maritime Policy*

Report on the Centre for Maritime Policy* The Centre for Maritime Policy (CMP) at the University of Wollongong in New South Wales, Australia, continued with a busy programme of activities after its suc- cessful start to operations in 1994. There were many developments relevant to the Centre's interests on both the national and international scenes. These develop- ments are the source of opportunities for CMP to pursue its mission of providing a focal point for multi-disciplinary, policy-oriented research, teaching and consultancy services on maritime issues in Australia and the Asia Pacific region. The particular focus of CMP's activities has been on maritime security (includ- ing law of the sea, regional cooperation, maritime surveillance and the security of seaborne trade) and maritime and coastal zone planning and management (includ- ing oceans policy, environmental issues, marine pollution, legislation, regulation and enforcement). These issues reflect the principal areas of expertise and strengths of the Centre and its research associates. The entry into force of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea in November 1994, and the earlier proclamation by Australia of an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in August 1994 led to an upsurge of interest in Australia in the management of Australia's maritime zones, http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Ocean Yearbook Online Brill

Abstract

The Centre for Maritime Policy (CMP) at the University of Wollongong in New South Wales, Australia, continued with a busy programme of activities after its suc- cessful start to operations in 1994. The entry into force of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea in November 1994, and the earlier proclamation by Australia of an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in August 1994 led to an upsurge of interest in Australia in the management of Australia's maritime zones,
