Rene Jean Dupuy (1918-1997): In Memoriam

Rene Jean Dupuy (1918-1997): In Memoriam Rene Jean Dupuy, a giant in the field of international law, died in Nice, France, on 17 July 1997, at the age of 79. He was a member of the 101 Planning Council right from the beginning and a member of the jury for the Arvid Pardo Prize. With him has disappeared one of the finest representatives of the French school of interna- tional law. The richness of his personality and talents makes it a difficult task to describe the enormous vacuum and consequent sense of loss that his departure has created. What he has contributed to the City of Man cannot be measured only by his scientific achievements as a remarkable teacher of international law and political history. His impressive contribution to the development of international law and his lucid vision of the destiny of humanity, torn between Sisyphus and Prometheus, were excep- tional, but he was distinguished as well by his human qualities, a great aristocrat of the mind and of the heart. Rene Jean Dupuy stands among the great international lawyers of this century who has excelled in every aspect of that calling: as teacher, as scholar and writer, as consultant to governments, as advocate http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Ocean Yearbook Online Brill

Abstract

Rene Jean Dupuy, a giant in the field of international law, died in Nice, France, on 17 July 1997, at the age of 79. Rene Jean Dupuy stands among the great international lawyers of this century who has excelled in every aspect of that calling: as teacher, as scholar and writer, as consultant to governments, as advocate
