International Northern Sea Route Programme (INSROP)* PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The International Northern Sea Route Programme (INSROP) is a 5-year multidiscipli- nary and multilateral research program, commencing on 1 June 1993. The three principal cooperating partners are the Central Marine Research and Design Institute (CNIIMF), St. Petersburg, Russia; Fridtjof Nansen Institute (FNI), Lysaker, Norway; and Ship and Ocean Foundation (SOF), Tokyo, Japan. INSROP is split into four subprograms: Natural Conditions and Navigation; Envi- ronmental Factors; Trade and Commercial Shipping Aspects; and Political, Legal and Strategic Factors. These four subprograms are closely interrelated, and findings in one program will be made available for use by the other three programs. The INSROP Secretariat will coordinate this multidisciplinary flow of information, designated to fill the gaps in our current knowledge about shipping along the Northern Sea Route. The aim of INSROP is to build up a knowledge base adequate to provide a foundation for long-term planning and decision making by state agencies as well as private companies, etc., for purposes of promoting the use of the Northern Sea Route for transit and regional development in northern Russia and neighboring regions. The highest official body of INSROP is the Steering Committee of Sponsors, comprising six representative members elected from http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Ocean Yearbook Online Brill
