Report of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), 1992 * The International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) is required, under its conven- tion, to hold a conference every 5 years and during this conference to elect a new directing committee for the following 5-year period. This event took place in 1992 with the holding of the 14th International Hydrographic Conference. The resulting new directing committee comprises Rear Admiral Christian Andreasen (U.S.), Mr. Adam J. Kerr (Canada), and Rear Admiral Giuseppe Angrisano (Italy). IHO, which was originally created in 1921, now has 59 member states. Its secretar- iat, the International Hydrographic Bureau (IHB), is located in Monaco, where it enjoys the use of premises provided by the Principality of Monaco. The IHB staff, including the three members of the directing committee, numbers 21 in total. For convenience the programs of the organization and consequently the work of the IHB may be classified under three major activities: ocean mapping, new chart technology, and technical assistance to developing countries. Associated with these activities is the basic occupation of standard setting and the publication of technical papers. The IHB publishes a monthly bulletin and a twice-yearly I.H. Review, which includes articles dealing with hydrography, oceanography, and associated sciences.
