GENERAL Pursuant to decisions of the Governing Body of the ILO at its 244th Session (Novem- ber 1989) and the Maritime Safety Committee of the IMO at its 58th Session (May 1990), the Joint Committee held its Eighth Session from 17 to 21 September 1990 at the International Labour Office, Geneva. The following were appointed as Officers of this session of the Committee: Chairman: Mr. K. Mols Sorensen (Denmark)-ILO Seafarers' member Vice-Chairmen: Mr. J. H. A. Gauw (Netherlands)-IMO member; Mr. K. Damk- jaer (Denmark)-ILO Shipowners' member AGENDA The agenda as adopted by the Committee consisted of a single item entitled "Fatigue as a factor in the manning and safety of ships." The principal working documents of this session were papers submitted by the IMO (JCT/8/1990/1), the International Shipping Federation (ISF) (JCT/8/1990/2), and the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) (JCT/8/1990/3). OPENING OF THE SESSION The session was opened by Mr. H. Maier, Deputy Director-General of the ILO. He drew attention to the considerable contribution of the Committee in bringing uniform and improved standards of training to the shipping industry.
