IOC: Excerpts from the Biennial Report for 1978-19791

IOC: Excerpts from the Biennial Report for 1978-19791 INTRODUCTION During the biennium the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), an independent unit within the Natural Science Sector of Unesco (doc. 18 C/86), con- tinued to "promote scientific investigation with a view to learning more about the nature and resources of the ocean through the concerted action of its members," pursuant to Article 1.2 of its Statutes. The Commission continued its Long-term and Expanded Programme of Oceanic Exploration and Research (LEPOR), including pro- grammes and projects under the International Decade of Ocean Exploration (IDOE) which will come to an end on 31 December 1980. The Commission's activities fall into two main categories: Ocean Science and Ocean Services. To facilitate its regional co-operation, the Commission made increasing use of its regional units: the Operational Unit in Monaco for the Mediterranean; the IOCARIBE Regional Secretariat, which was first set up in Trinidad, and is now in Costa Rica; and the International Tsunami Information Center (ITIC), in Honolulu. The Commission has continued to co-operate closely with the UN and the UN Environment Programme, and several UN Specialized Agencies. Matters of mutual concern to the IOC, UN, FAO, Unesco, WMO and IMCO are discussed regularly in the Intersecretariat Committee on Scientific Programmes Relating http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Ocean Yearbook Online Brill
